Somewhere in the last five years, "robot" quietly stopped meaning a vacuum that bumps into your coffee table and started meaning a whole category of appliances that do real, physical work around a house. Mowers cut lawns unsupervised. Vacuums map floor plans better than most people could draw one from memory. Pool bots climb walls. That is not a sales pitch, it is just where the technology actually is. But "robots do household work now" covers a lot of ground, and the honest version of that story has some categories that are genuinely solved and others that are still figuring themselves out. Here is where each one stands.
The categories that are actually done
Robot mowers
Robot mowers are the most settled category on this list. The current generation of wire-free models uses RTK positioning to map a yard to within a couple of centimeters, which means setup is walking the perimeter once instead of burying hundreds of feet of boundary wire. That used to be the biggest complaint about robot mowing, and for a lot of yards it is simply gone. The older wire-guided mowers have not disappeared, and they are still a reasonable choice if your yard is simple and your budget is tight, but the wire-free approach is where the category is heading. The remaining edge cases are steep slopes, oddly shaped lots with narrow choke points, and multi-zone properties that need a mower smart enough to travel between areas on its own. Those are solvable problems now, not open questions.
Robot vacuums and mops
Robot vacuums made the jump from novelty to genuinely load-bearing appliance a while ago, and the mopping hybrids have mostly closed the gap with dedicated mops for everyday maintenance cleaning. Lidar and camera-based navigation means the good models build an actual map of your home, remember it, and avoid known trouble spots like cables and pet bowls instead of learning the hard way every time. Self-emptying docks and self-washing mop pads took the category from "needs your attention twice a week" to "needs your attention once a month," which is the difference that actually changes behavior. The gap between a good vacuum and a mediocre one is still wide. Cheaper models still get stuck on threshold transitions, still tangle in long hair or cords, and still map poorly in cluttered homes. That gap is exactly what we spend time on here, because the spec sheet rarely tells you which side of it a given model lands on.
Pool robots
Pool robots are a smaller category than mowers or vacuums, but they are just as mature within their lane. Wall-climbing, floor vacuuming, and surface skimming are all standard now on mid-range units, and the main differentiators are cycle time, filter maintenance, and how well the thing handles a pool that is not a simple rectangle. If you own a pool and are still manually running a pole vacuum every week, that is a chore a robot can take off your plate today with minimal risk.
The categories still earning trust
Window cleaners
Window-cleaning robots are the category where the pitch and the reality are furthest apart. The core idea, a suction-mounted unit that wipes glass in overlapping passes, works. The part that makes people nervous is what happens if power drops or suction fails on a second or third story window, and that is a fair concern, not a paranoid one. The better units on the market address this with a genuine mechanical backup, usually a safety rope or a battery-backed suction reserve, and the weaker ones lean on marketing language that does not hold up to a direct question about failure modes. This is a category where reading past the headline feature matters more than almost anywhere else on this site.
Snow robots
Robot snow clearing is the newest category we cover, and it is honestly still early. What ships today handles light, powdery, predictable snowfall on flat, obstacle-free driveways reasonably well. It does not yet handle heavy wet snow, drifting, or complex driveway layouts with the same confidence that robot mowers handle lawns. That will likely change as the underlying navigation tech, much of it borrowed directly from robot mowers, matures for a harsher environment. For now, treat this category as promising rather than proven, and expect the gap between marketing copy and real-world performance to be wider here than anywhere else.
The niche categories worth knowing about
Litter robots
Self-cleaning litter boxes occupy an odd space: the good ones solve a genuinely unpleasant daily chore and cat owners who switch rarely go back. The bad ones jam, smell faster than a manual box because waste sits in a sealed compartment, or spook cats enough that they stop using the box entirely, which is worse than the problem you were trying to solve. This is a category where reading actual long-term ownership experience matters far more than the feature list on the box.
Security and companion robots
Home security robots and companion robots are the two categories most likely to be solving a problem you do not actually have. Patrol robots make real sense for large properties, warehouses, and businesses where a moving camera covers more ground than fixed ones. For a typical house, a couple of well-placed stationary cameras usually do the same job for less money and less complexity. Companion robots split similarly: a genuinely useful check-in device for an aging parent living alone is a different product than a conversational novelty that ends up on a shelf after the first month. What this means if you are buying
The short version: if you are looking at a mower, a vacuum, or a pool robot, the technology is ready and the question is which model fits your specific yard, floor plan, or pool, not whether the category works at all.
